Storage location management – The approach to organising a warehouse

When organising a warehouse, the aim should be to create an order of warehouse processes. The basis for this is a sensible distribution of tasks. So it is necessary to define the hierarchical structures, responsibilities and accountabilities in a warehouse in advance.

Tool: Task analysis

One possible tool is a task analysis that breaks down the complete warehouse process into tasks and subtasks, correlates them with each other and groups them accordingly. The result is an organisational chart that clearly shows the tasks and responsibilities. Depending on the design and degree of automation of the warehouse, tasks can be controlled and executed by people and/or IT systems.

The equivalent of the personnel structure warehouse manager / warehouse administrator / group leader / warehouse worker in the automated area would be: higher-level ERP system / warehouse management system / material flow control system / conveyor system.
