Basics of warehouse planning – state analysis and target concept

In the past, the main focus when planning a warehouse was often exclusively on the costs incurred and how to minimize them. Today, the planning and realization of a warehouse is considered more holistically in order to ensure long-term economic efficiency through greater efficiency. Total cost optimization also takes into account values such as order throughput times, inventory reduction according to the level of service, and adherence to delivery dates.
The classic planning process begins with the definition of the objective, followed by an analysis of the current situation, including the identification of weak points. On this basis, a target concept is developed that highlights various implementation options and that will later serve as a basis for decision-making.

The objectives determine what is to be achieved with the project. They are based on the initial situation. To define the objectives, the company’s options must be carefully considered at this point. What is the current situation? Where are the problems? How can these problems be eliminated?
