Requirement profile for order picking systems
Modern distribution centers with a so-called full range of products must have access to over 100,000 different items in some cases and struggle with the difficulty that the range changes regularly.
The best way to illustrate the picking effort is to look at the number of customer orders per day. Each of these orders in turn consists of a large number of pick items, which define the resource consumption.
Another factor that should not be underestimated is the range of order sizes.
The following data provides a comprehensive requirement profile for the picking system:
- Number of items
- Orders per day
- Pick positions per client
- Variation in order size
- Dynamics of the range of items
With this knowledge, the requirements profile can be projected in a coordinate system with five axes, with the help of an unfavorably stretched surface. This makes it possible to accompany every evolutionary step of the picking process.
Within the picking process, the goods can be provided statically or dynamically.
For more information on static picking, see man-to-goods picking.
