Identification point (I-point)

An identification point (I-point) is a subsystem of the goods receipt. It is the point at which information about the package is merged with the information from the warehouse management system. The I-point is the last part of the goods receipt before the goods are sent to the warehouse.

At the identification point, data such as quantity, size, color and weight of the goods to be stored are read and transmitted to the data processing system. The warehouse management system then determines the storage time and storage location. When a package passes the I-point, the goods are first checked and then the system controls where the goods have to go in the warehouse.

Packages can also be rejected and ejected at the identification point. This happens in particular if the goods are incorrectly packaged, damaged or do not comply with the warehouse specifications in any other way.

You can find more information on identification under Incoming goods identification.
