Logistics encompasses all tasks related to the planning, control, implementation, and optimization of processes along the value chain. Warehouse logistics, also known as intralogistics, determines how a company’s own goods and those belonging to other companies are stored and managed in the warehouse. The task of warehouse logistics is therefore to establish systems for all types of storage, picking and for the transport of goods from goods receipt through goods issue .
Goods are properly received and inspected for condition and contents. If the goods are in good order, they are added to inventory and stored. In the process, each item is assigned its storage location is assigned, and this information is entered into the warehouse management system. Every employee must be able to track exactly when, which goods, and where they were stored. In particular, sales staff and administrative personnel who are in direct contact with customers must have constant access to up-to-date inventory levels. Often, a higher-level ERP system must also be supplied with the current inventory data.
Inventory in Warehouse Logistics
Accurate inventory levels also play a crucial role in order picking. Goods must be retrievable even after a long period of time. When a product is sold and needs to be shipped to the customer, it is essential to know where the item is located. As soon as a customer orders a specific item, it must be marked in the warehouse inventory. In a large company, many orders are received and shipped daily. Not every order is picked, packed, and shipped immediately. Certain orders take priority, or a large shipment of goods may be pending, which means individual orders must be put on hold because specific items from the large shipment are needed. In a warehouse, many processes run in parallel; nevertheless, warehouse staff must know exactly at all times which goods are already being sent to a customer and which are still available.
Ultimately, the picked and packed goods must leave the warehouse in exactly the same coordinated manner as they arrived. Important: The goods must be correctly addressed and sent via the proper shipping route.
The Goal of Warehouse Logistics
The goal of warehouse logistics is the optimal use of warehouse functions. All areas of a warehouse work together and are interdependent. All goods within the warehouse must be locatable at all times, both on the warehouse shelves and in the system. New goods must be put into storage quickly and neatly and be available again when sold or transferred to another location.
