Handling Unit
A handling unit (HU) is a physical unit made up of packaging materials and the goods inside. Packaging materials can be load carriers or packaging material. The HU is therefore a combination of product and packaging material. Several handling units can in turn form a common handling unit. In this case, we are talking about a nested handling unit.
The handling unit contains the following information on the packaging materials and goods:
- Identification number
- Dimension
- Weight
- Volume
- Status
- Materials and quantities
- Packaging material
- Packing instruction
An HU is usually provided with an EAN128 label and this is read with a scanner. The label contains the unique identification number of the HU. If an HU contains subordinate units, the label contains the numbers of the sub-HUs in addition to the identification number of the nested HU.
A handling unit is created from an HU template. This describes the packing structure, among other things.
Handling units can create greater dynamics in intralogistics. By forming units and labelling them together, the throughput time per order can be reduced and stock control optimized.
Handling units can be formed, for example, for goods that have to be stored in a clearing area.
