Breuninger
TUP.WMS Warehouse Management System at Breuninger
When Breuninger sought to consolidate its previously separate store and online fulfillment operations across three locations into a single multichannel warehouse, the long-established Stuttgart-based company chose TUP following an intensive selection process. At the new Saxenheim Distribution Center (WDZ)—with approximately 76,000 m² of gross floor area, handed over in 2019, and launched in 2020—the custom-tailored TUP.WMS “Breuninger Fulfillment System” (BFS), which covers the entire order processing for both shipping channels—from goods receipt to goods issue—and controls comprehensive automation technology such as conveyor systems, automated guided vehicles, and an automated small-parts warehouse.
A key component is the returns process: As early as the receiving process, the system checks whether an item can be assigned to a pending customer order, thereby immediately returning returned items to the shipping process. This is supplemented by priority-driven order management and end-to-end packing dialogs with product images, which provide direct visual support to pickers and packers of all experience levels.
As CTO Frank Postel emphasized in an interview, the system proved its worth especially in the year of the go-live, when Breuninger’s e-commerce growth plans were exceeded by a factor of two—a stress test that the solution handled without any issues. For him, the decisive factor was that TUP delivered “asset software” rather than a rigid, off-the-shelf solution—software that can be adapted flexibly and quickly to new requirements.
With the expansion of the West Hall (40,000 m² gross floor area), the WDZ Sachsenheim grew to over 115,000 m² in 2024 and solidified its status as one of Europe’s leading fashion fulfillment centers. The facility handles shipments to numerous countries throughout Europe. TUP’s modular system enabled seamless scaling and, as part of the expansion, also took over order management for an AutoStore system.
TUP supported Breuninger on its journey from a fragmented, three-site logistics operation to a European omnichannel powerhouse. By using custom software instead of a standard solution, TUP laid the foundation for sustainable growth and positioned Breuninger as a leading fashion fulfillment partner in Europe.
