Based on the height of an adult (average 1.70 m), a shelf can be divided into vertical zones. The reach zone begins at an average height of 60–80 cm and extends up to a height of 1.40–1.60 m.
Employees can reach the reach zone without any additional aids. Therefore, inventory that is considered to be high-turnover is usually stored in this area. This saves time during order picking on the one hand, and on the other hand, employees expend little energy due to the ease of removal.
The area above the reach zone is called the viewing zone. For more information, see Shelf zones – viewing zone.
